My step-father decided to take me and my two step sisters to Currie's on Fletcher & Riverside. My mother and maternal grandmother came along. When my step father attempted to order for us, the woman behind the counter said, "I'm sorry but we don't serve Mexicans."

I remember how humiliated my step father was. My grandmother stepped forward and, because she was not Mexican, was allowed to order for the children.

Certainly it was a different time and such a thing would never be allowed now. The silver lining was that it shaped me in such a way that when I was a little older and the civil rights movement was afoot, that limited personal experience with discrimination gave me what it took to be a strong advocate (and hippie protestor) for civil rights everywhere.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29191878.post-24086443054215832842012-05-12T13:55:59.940-07:002012-05-12T13:55:59.940-07:00Yup--that's Bruce, the singing cop--not really...Yup--that's Bruce, the singing cop--not really a security guard--just a part-time actor/singer who I accompanied on piano for many months when Old Towne Mall opened. They had a small pet store or at least a place you could buy fish stuff and Sea Monkeys. They had a comic book shop too. As I went to high school I met the daughter of the owners of the juice shop. The only remnants of the mall is the original Old Towne Lock and Key (owned by the same family today). The bumper cars were replaced I believe originally by TIME Magazine or at least they had a large TIME sign. At the time of the "Pepsi Challenge" they would set up tables near the carousel and you could take the Pepsi challenge, it was very close to the Federated Group. The two places with neat posters and paraphernalia were Leland's and the Scorpio Shop. Not that long ago I saw the Scorpio Shop on Hermosa Ave in Hermosa Beach. At the northern most end one of the last food shops served Italian food. It had a black and white picture of a baby with a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs on top of his head. The sauce and spaghetti were dripping down his face as he was crying and the caption read "Mama said there would be days like this". At that time the hot dog on a stick was down at that end before it relocated closer to the theaters. There was a t-shirt place where you could choose from an assorted selection of prints. As I remember more stuff, I'll post it.Scottnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29191878.post-58830284999791177512012-02-02T08:24:29.800-08:002012-02-02T08:24:29.800-08:00Thanks for bringing back memories of Curries. Yes, it was a few doors down from the carousel; next to it on the south side of the entrance was an open space in which the mall used to decorate for holidays- particularly Christmas, where the Santa would sit - it was very elaborate. Across from the Belgian Waffle cafe was a Federated group and a book store - I think it was Crown but maybe B. Dalton; Before I worked there I grew up with my grandparents and aunt taking me to Old Towne to go on the carousel and on other rides that were built into the building just as the stores were. It was my first job and a great experience. The Belgian Waffle Cafe had been there since the mall was built. It was kind of sad when the mall shut down. I was pretty involved in the expansion of the games and miniatures section that some above commenters lamented, but I was active on both sides, and built models as well as painted and scratch built figures, gaming, etc. I also miss the shop. I've honestly never come across anything like it again.
